Anies-Muhaimin seeks to chart a new course from Jokowi government

OVERVIEW

The candidate pair of Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar has emerged as a formidable force in the political landscape ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The ticket's background and experience bring unique perspectives to the table, something different from the other two tickets: Ganjar Pranowo- Mahfud MD and Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

While the latter two seek to continue and or accelerate the developments made and achieved by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's government, Anies and Muhaimin promise significant changes as stated in their manifesto carrying the vision of "Prosperous and Just Indonesia for All."1

Going by the mononym AMIN, the ticket's manifesto also contains its mission. Much like the other two candidates, AMIN promises to carry out eight missions in total if it wins the mandate. The first one is to ensure the availability of basic needs and affordable living costs through food self-sufficiency, energy resilience and water sovereignty. To realize the first mission, AMIN proposes initiatives such as an agro-maritime revolution, minimizing imports, subsidized mortgage programs for low-income households, implementing the "Indonesia Toward Renewable Energy" program through energy diversification, establishing an endowment fund for further research into new and renewable energy, as well as ensuring the conservation of groundwater reserves by encouraging cities to implement the principles of a sponge city, among other initiatives.

Second is to eradicate poverty by expanding business opportunities and creating employment, achieving fair wages, ensuring economic progress based on freedom and equity and supporting Indonesian corporations to thrive domestically and grow on a global stage. The agenda includes social assistance programs and food bank ecosystems to reduce Indonesia's poverty rate to 4-5 percent by 2029, creating 15 million jobs by 2025-2029, implementing fair wages, fixing infrastructure in underdeveloped areas and policy reforms to ensure economic equity and achieve the fulfillment of women's rights, implementing maternity and paternity leave and family welfare empowerment among other policies to ensure gender equality. Moreover, AMIN seeks to use fiscal policies to drive growth and equity, creating monetary policies that support macroeconomic stability, increasing investment and making it easier of to do business, as well as simplifying the establishment and administration of cooperatives and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Third, Anies and Muhaimin are also on a mission to achieve sustainable ecological justice for future generations through programs that will strengthen environmental governance that focuses on the protection and restoration of the environment, harnessing new and renewable energy to meet the net-zero emissions (NZE) 2060 commitment, promoting a green economy by encouraging a just transition, adapting and mitigating the effects of climate change by prioritizing policies and programs that support Indonesia's NZE 2060 pledge and reducing air, water and waste pollution.

Fourth is to build cities and villages based on humane, just and mutually advancing regions. AMIN's key agenda is to advance cities and competitiveness through means such as decent housing and an integrated public transportation system. Additionally, AMIN seeks to foster self-reliant and prosperous villages through increasing government support, accelerating and implementing agrarian reform and promoting regional and metropolitan growth.

What's more

Like other contenders, AMIN also seeks to realize healthy, intelligent, productive, moral and civilized Indonesian individuals. Reliable national healthcare stands as a key agenda in AMIN's fifth mission with promises such as revitalizing community health centers (Puskesmas) throughout Indonesia and building Class A hospitals in every province. Other aspects include equitable access to education with promises such as providing education assistance to reduce drop-out rates, religious-based educational institutions, the quality and well-being of teachers and educational staff through training and or scholarships, as well as more affordable higher education.

Sixth, AMIN aims to achieve prosperous and happy Indonesian families as the root of the nation's strength through respect for mothers, by providing full protection, attention and assistance to pregnant mothers. Moreover, AMIN seeks to ensure the health, intelligence and happiness of children, especially through early education. Anies and Muhaimin have also formulated an agenda that focuses on family well-being and family education.

AMIN's seventh mission refers to its foreign policy where the ticket promises to strengthen national defense and security while enhancing Indonesia's role and leadership on the global level to achieve national interests and world peace. In this sense, AMIN's foreign policy will be based on justice and progress that includes economic diplomacy and positioning Indonesia as a global soft power. Anies and Muhaimin also want to ensure the availability of contemporary and adaptive defense equipment through the completion of the minimum essential force (MEF) program, enhancement and implementation of the post-2024 MEF program and the procurement of network-centric defense equipment.

Lastly, AMIN's human rights manifesto states that the ticket is committed to restoring the quality of democracy, upholding the rule of law and human rights, combating corruption without discrimination and administering a pro-people government. The fight against corruption stands out with an ambition to improve Indonesia's Corruption Perception Index to 44-46 by 2029. Furthermore, AMIN promises a professional and service-oriented bureaucracy that is fast, easy and efficient, as well as a comprehensive regional autonomy system that puts an end to the tug-and-pull between the central government and regional government.
